For over half a century, Airlie has been welcoming global leaders, heads of state, and diplomats who have convened at the storied Virginia estate for conferences and programs dedicated to social progress, education, environmental research, and public health. Just as we have played host to these world leaders for decades, we now look forward to welcoming our next distinguished guest: you.
Originally conceived by Dr. Murdock Head, who purchased Airlie Farm in 1956, the Airlie Center was founded as a venue where individuals and organizations could exchange ideas in a distraction-free, neutral environment amid the natural beauty of Virginia’s Piedmont region. By integrating modern meeting facilities into the picturesque farm, Dr. Head succeeded in founding a world-renowned meeting and conference destination, a place LIFE magazine heralded as “an island of thought.”
Today, Airlie continues this legacy by hosting conferences, corporate retreats, team-building events, and meetings for the non-profit, private, and government sectors. The magnificent setting of our property has also made Airlie a sought-after destination for weddings, weekend getaways, and vacations. Located in the heart of Virginia wine and horse country less than an hour’s drive from Washington, D.C., Airlie is an ideal choice for country jaunts, romantic getaways, and family vacations.
Spread over 1,200 lush and secluded acres in the foothills of the Shanandoah Mountains, the many unique venues and lodging options at Airlie offer accommodations for nearly any size group. Our 154 guest rooms offer a range of accommodations, including five ADA rooms which are accessibly designed for ease of mobility. Our Cottage Suites are perfect for groups or large families traveling together and feature four bedrooms with private baths, a full living room, patio, and kitchen.
Stately, serene, and sophisticated – Welcome to Airlie.
